FREE THINGS TO DO IN NYC THIS WEEK
It’s no secret that living in New York comes with a cost…literally. Manhattan is an incredible mecca that people all over the world hope to visit, but it also happens to be one of the priciest place to live in the US as well. Though the city can be an expensive place to live, there are also a ton of events always happening that don’t come with huge entry fees. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of FREE events this week that you should go check out, and save some money doing so.
1. Riverflicks in Hudson River Park
Who doesn’t want to go lay in a nice park and watch a good movie every once in a while? Every Wednesdays through late August, the Hudson River Park is hosting free movie screenings for adults or kids. Whether you want to bring your family or enjoy a relaxing movie night in the park, Riverflicks has been a successful event series that has people of all ages excited for Wednesdays. Movies begin around dusk, usually around 8:30 PM, so get there early and reserve a spot on the lush lawn.

2. Metropolitan Opera Summer Recital Series
The Met’s annual concert series has returned to New York, bringing with it some great opera music for free. Every Tuesday and Thursday until the end of July, the Met will hold four more concerts in four boroughs of New York, and is expecting a good turnout for the final shows of the year. Whether you’re trying to come up with ideas for an inexpensive date or you’re just interested in listening to some good opera, check out the Met’s Recital Series and have a free and fun time.

3. Big Terrific Comedy Show
Looking for a free laugh? Gathering rave reviews, Big Terrific has solidified its image as a wonderfully entertaining comedic performance, and will continue to take place on Wednesdays in Williamsburg. This week, the lineup will include comedians Max Silvestri, Jim Tews, Kenny DeForest, and Andy Sandford. Get there early if you want to find a good spot to enjoy the show.

4. Francis Upritchard’s, “War Dance”
Taking over the Anton Kern Gallery is New Zealand artist Francis Upritchard’s exhibit, “War Dance.” Upritchard has filled the gallery with eight figurative sculptures that are seemingly engaged in a ritualistic war dance. Upritchard’s creatures come alive as they appear to truly take place in a ceremonial dance of sorts, and the exhibit is a must-see for art enthusiasts, especially considering it is free. The exhibit will continue through August 9, 2013.

5. Big City Fishing
If you’re an avid fisherman or just want to try fishing, you’re in luck. Each summer, Hudson River Park offers Big City Fishing, a free program, to those as young as five who are eager to learn how to fish and learn more about the Hudson River environment. They provide the rods, reels, bait and instruction. Beyond learning how to fish, the program also provides participants with a first-hand opportunity to learn about river ecology and the many fish species that can be found in the river. So drop by and drop a line in the Hudson, and maybe you’ll reel in something special.

6. Summer Stage Dance Performance
Every summer, Central Park vamps up with the Summer Stage shows, and is always a great event for family and friends to enjoy for free. This week, the contemporary dance group of Martha Graham will take the stage for two nights to perform much-anticipated dance medleys. Special guests are also anticipated to perform along with Martha Graham, and with slightly cooler temperatures early this week, the show is expected to be very popular. You don’t want to miss this free performance!

7. Washington Square Park Music Festival
Completing the Washington Square Park Music Festival are two more shows in July, on the Tuesdays of the 23rd and the 30th. Displaying a variety of different musical medians, the music festival has been an amusing attraction for friends and family to come out and enjoy during the summer. Taking place in the middle of Washington Square Park, the festival is sure to successfully continue to please audiences with its final performances.
